The spread of Pig’s Ear in northern Europe is concentrated to the northeast coast of Uppland, in Sweden.

Beautiful and Vulnerable

THE PIG’S EAR only has a few thousand known locations in Europe where it grows and most of these are beech forests. In Sweden, the mushroom mainly grows in coniferous woods with lots of spruce and limey soil. These types of terrain are starting to disappear and they contain not only rare herbs but mushrooms that are close to extinction. They live in symbiosis with their host trees, which makes them vulnerable to modern forestry, and the Pig’s Ear is a species that is now being actively preserved.

PIG’S EAR WAS previously known as the club trumpet mushroom in Sweden and was part of the Craterellus genus; now it’s part of the genus Gomphus, and is the only one of its kind in northern Europe, though there are two other Gomphus in North America. It is loosely related to the Chanterelle, Clavariadelphus pistillaris, and Ramaria.
